Mini-Lessons- Seed Writing- Make It Better- Publishing- Fancy Notes
In Writer's Workshop, students start all writing projects with mini-lessons teaching specific craft skills then developing those skills through writing, writing and more writing! Look for mini-lessons to be in the form of in-class activities, mentor text reading, and notes.
Seed writing is often a favorite activity for my students as they get to write without constraints and rules. These seeds lead to the other steps in the writing process and give students choice in their final writing topics for publishing. Parents, ask to see your student's seed writing. They are proud of their ideas and love to share their writing in conferences! The creativity the students share through their writing impresses me daily!
Make It Better is the process in which students choose their favorite seed and move through the writing process using that original idea. The six traits of writing are employed to develop the writing into an organized, interesting and publishable writing piece.
Publishing finalizes a writing piece into its final form. Students only publish once they have employed all their resources and knowledge of the writing traits and writing process to revise and edit writing into a something to be proud of. Once published, rubrics are used to evaluate the student's work as it is a reflection of the very best the student believes he or she can produce. The rubrics for all major writing assignments are available on Engrade!
Fancy Notes are the last part of the workshop. Fancy Notes activities cement specific craft information for a student because students must take the information provided and 'dress it up' into a form that is memorable. The hope is that students will return to their fancy notes throughout the year to use the skills and information the notes provide to help them with all assignments throughout the year!
